Apoxie Clay Sculpture

I had some issues working with the "Sculpey" clay maybe because I was working large I don't know but I had some cracks show up several days after baking that really worried me. So I've picked up some new clay called "Apoxie Clay" from "Aves Studio" and I quite like it . It's a two part clay you mix what you need as you need it and it dries in about 3 hours. It can be soften or smoothed with water. This is my first sculpture with it I hope that it's fairly easy to paint. I added a shot of the armature I used  along with a look at how I bulked it out using newspaper and drywall tape.

Painting Sculpture

I have to say this is really tough for me painting a face on sculpture. There's this line between making it look too realistic or more like a patina on a statue . I have yet to find where I like it best. I have painted this face maybe 10 times now from super realistic with bluish under tones and perfect eyeball iris to something looking like a bronze patina. Frankly the super realistic was scary to have around the house, I found I was just staring at it and it just stared back. The patina was really nice but I just wanted to see more. I think I'll do a little research maybe look at some Balinese masks and keep at it.

Sculpture of a Girl

I've almost finished with this on. I like to live with it for a day or two to make sure there's nothing more I'd like to do with it. Once its painted there's no going back.

Update on the Girl Head Sculpture

I'll have to come up with a better name for her rather than "Girl Head Sculpture". I decided to put her in a hoodie like the other one.

New little Head Sculpture

Another look at a work in progress. This one is a little smaller than the others in this series and an all together different head shape.

Another Look at A Work In Progress

I don't know what to name these post anymore. Here's another look at a previous posted work in progress. I'm not sure where it's going but he has some kind of hoodie on with a rooster kind of thing going. My favorite part is the bunched up material around his neck. I think I will add the shoulders and leave it as a bust.

Sculpture Work in Progress

Another little head. Heres how I do the eyes. Two little balls sort of flattened out.

Next I drop on a the upper eye lid.

Then the lower lid.

Oil under Painting

Technically it's called a" Grisaille" (pronounced griz-eye) an underpainting of gray values in preparation for glazing over with color. This is oil on a hardwood panel about 12" by 16".

Man looking Through a Porthole

Recast from an earlier mold. I'm thinking of revisiting this idea for wall mounted sculpture. Cast in plaster it's about 4" high.

Photos of work bench

Well I don't know what you got done over the long weekend but I got very little done in the shop. Heres a few shots , some heads made out of "sculptey" both about the size of a tennis ball. The little one looks kinda like "yoda". I told the kids if they were not good I would hang the one with the horns over their bed.
