Painting of a Girl

I thought I would give this little painting it's moment in the spot light. Unfortunately the wooden panel I was working on started to de-laminate so I will try it again on another board. But heres a look.

Drawing Board Photos

What's on your drawing board? I have had a great summer with the boys but all things must pass and school starts next week .....Yeah!  I feel a very productive welling up inside. Just to get things rolling and in preparation for painting the sculptures I started painting some little wood panels I had out in the garage with some drawings out of my notebook. Heres a look.

Bunny Wall Plaque

Not much to say here , except everyone should have one.

Bunny House Group Shot

It's not easy to do a group shot.  They're definitely not camera shy though, maybe they're a little to eager, "curb the zeal guys"!

Ears for the Bunnys

Heres a few ways I like to set up the armatures for the ears . I really don't want these to break off especially if I'm going to be selling them.

New Bunny House Photos

Haven't posted in a while so heres another look at yet another Bunny House.

Bunny House with Teeth

These are getting funnier looking all the time. I think they would look great wall mounted.

Witch Doctor Sculpture

I'm nearly finished with this witch doctor sculpture, I think I'll live with it for a while and see if it needs anything else before I paint it.

Bunny House

I did a drawing of this little bunny house and thought it might be a nice sculpture. I'd like to see one of these in real life. It turned out ok, I think I will do another and fatten it up a bit, also I would like to do a tongue on the next one.

Mural Work this Weekend

Got the opportunity to visit an old mural I did back in '06. The school asked if I could come back and touch it up a bit. I ended up painting the whole thing again, the acrylic had faded somewhat and I felt it needed a  brighter pallet. I had forgotten what an undertaking this was the first time painting on cinder block and the sheer size of it ( 36') I must have been nuts. They have recently added some climbing equipment in front of it so it makes it hard to photograph but here's a look.
Cool thing is the teachers tell me the kids have all picked out their favorite characters and they have made up games to play on the wall during their outside playtime.

Quick Share and a Look at What's on my Workbench

I recently took in the Tim Burton show at "LACMA" here in LA, it was an awesome show. I think what I got out of it most was not to hold back. I sometimes withhold on some of my wilder ideas thinking they are too out there and no one would relate. So that was a share from the past, from here on I'm committing to being self expressed in all situations and sharing.
At the show I  saw a glass case which held the various heads used for the "Jack Skellington" puppet from the movie " "Nightmare before Christmas. Each head was about 2" round with a different expression and mouth position . They would replace the whole head during the filming process. I really liked how much expression they got out of this little featureless head with it's vacuous eyes. So I thought I would give it a try and make a my own little expressive skull heads. Here's a look.

Shaman Sculpture

Wow! Summer time is taking every bit of my attention. Kids, cousins, swimming pools, the beach it's hard to find time to do any sculpting. I find I have to wedge it in where I can. Heres a look at another little character I'm finishing up though. He looks kind of shaman looking with the skull and jar in his hands sort of an alchemist. It's an "Apoxie Clay" sculpture about 9 inches tall I do intend to paint him soon.

Apoxie Clay Sculpture

I had some issues working with the "Sculpey" clay maybe because I was working large I don't know but I had some cracks show up several days after baking that really worried me. So I've picked up some new clay called "Apoxie Clay" from "Aves Studio" and I quite like it . It's a two part clay you mix what you need as you need it and it dries in about 3 hours. It can be soften or smoothed with water. This is my first sculpture with it I hope that it's fairly easy to paint. I added a shot of the armature I used  along with a look at how I bulked it out using newspaper and drywall tape.

Painting Sculpture

I have to say this is really tough for me painting a face on sculpture. There's this line between making it look too realistic or more like a patina on a statue . I have yet to find where I like it best. I have painted this face maybe 10 times now from super realistic with bluish under tones and perfect eyeball iris to something looking like a bronze patina. Frankly the super realistic was scary to have around the house, I found I was just staring at it and it just stared back. The patina was really nice but I just wanted to see more. I think I'll do a little research maybe look at some Balinese masks and keep at it.

Sculpture of a Girl

I've almost finished with this on. I like to live with it for a day or two to make sure there's nothing more I'd like to do with it. Once its painted there's no going back.
